Team Mai (STEP BY STEP)

This is the drawing steps of my artwork below

Steps:
1. Paint Over Photo. I search for a good photo to draw on, then paint it to give it a painterly/anime feeling. Basically I colorpick the color then brush over the photo in one layer. I also simplify/add/delete some stuffs so it fits what I need.
2. Sketch. Sketch my characters on the background.
3. Lineart. Lining the sketch and fixing stuffs.
4. Base Color.
5. Shading. I cel shade my characters.
6. Shadow. More shadow, the step 5 was for giving a shape to the characters. This step is more to indicate where the light comes from and how the character affect the environment shadow. I use multiply layer here. I also emphasize the background light here.
7. Lighting & Glow. I make the lighting really simple, the only light was a the eyes light. Other than that, I use glow (hard light) on light colors like skin, white, yellow, etc. I also give overlay(red) around the edge of a shadow...it's just nice to give more volume on cel shading.
8. Finishing. Do some color balance, level, and contrast adjustment.
