Venus CG (STEP BY STEP)

Just wondering, when doing shading, can you just use black and grey colors or do you have to use different colors to make the character realistic (ex. when a person skin color is tan, use dark tan as the shading)? Because I'm having a hard time on my drawings and takes me a long time to execute them.
